If I could go back in time, there are a lot of things I’d try to say to my 21-year-old self. But I probably wouldn’t have listened anyways. I was right stubborn and fiercely proud at that age. The truth is, we have to make our own mistakes and we keep on making them until we learn the lesson. But sometimes mistakes aren’t really mistakes. If I could go back, there are things I would do differently and things that I would do exactly the same. It’s a mixed bag.
But if my 21-year-old self would’ve listened, this is what I think I would’ve said to her:
Your path is going to drastically change, what you think you are going to do with your life, that isn’t going to be what you are going to do and it is totally okay. Go with it and go with your gut.
It truly doesn’t matter what anyone thinks, be your own champion.
Do you, be you. You will find someone(s) who gets you, someone(s) on the same wavelength.
Enjoy the moment. Don’t try to control everything, just learn to control your reactions to things.
Chase dreams instead of people.
If someone wants to be there, they will be. If someone wants to be a part of your world, they will be a part of it. It’ll be pretty obvious.
Stick with your standards. Stick up for yourself when you need to.
You are not alone in your anxiety and worry. You are not alone in being an over thinker.
Yes, you are going to come back to Orangeville. Yes, it is both awful and okay. It is just a place, it doesn’t mean anything, don’t let it destroy you or change who you are.
You can change the world. Maybe it has all been done before, but it hasn’t been done by YOU. You have originality, you have perspective and you have intelligence and passion. You have your own take on things and you can do something meaningful if you want to.
Authenticity separates the mediocre from the masters.
Just do you and you’ll do fine.
What would you say to your younger self?
Those Friday feels. Hope you have a happy and healthy Halloween weekend,
